Contemporary Japanese Printmaking Course with Adrian Holmes at West Dean College

What an amazing weekend I have had learning traditional methods of mokuhanga – Japanese woodblock printmaking. The course was delivered at West Dean College by Adrian Holmes, who was extremely generous with both his knowledge and time. I decided to attend without any preconceived ideas about what design I would undertake. From undertaking a previous course in art handling, I knew that the botanical gardens around the college would be a source of inspiration for observational sketching. For four days I was completely absorbed in both a complex and enjoyable learning process. The skills I came away with are invaluable for integrating the method into my art practice.

Woodblock printing is a method I have been interested in for many years. In 2020 I had planned a three week research trip to Japan, which was unfortunately prospered, due to COVID. Im now looking forward to undertaking the trip in 2023.
