Description
Wintering June is a handmade mokuhanga woodcut created in my studio in Winchester, during the period of the Winter Solstice. The print is created through multiple reduction layers, producing bold fields of orange and blue alongside a complex, tactile surface.
Although made using traditional watercolour pigments, the work is informed by my background as a sculptor. I approach the image as a constructed form: stacked, weighted, and spatial. The composition can be read metaphorically, as summer held beneath the weight of winter, or as what I experience during my winter walks along the River Itchen, a season in suspension.
A sumi-e ink line rises along the right edge of the print. While vertical in movement, it carries a deliberate curve and heaviness, suggesting tension rather than lift, a gesture that both divides and connects the surrounding forms.
