In Glinda, Tony Spencer creates a site-specific botanical sculpture shaped by the vivid forms of the Witch Hazel in Sir Harold Hillier’s Winter Garden. The work highlights the plant’s striking structure and vibrant colour, drawing also on its astringent, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral qualities for conceptual depth.
Spencer transforms these ideas into a contemporary sculptural language. He uses aluminium and paint to amplify the plant’s natural character, giving it new presence and energy. Glinda debuted in Eight Sculptural Interventions, a showcase of outdoor works by the eight artists selected for the CAS Emerging Sculpture Award 2023/24.
